This was a comment from one of the delegates on Debs Yerby’s Leadership Programme for a major automotive firm.

“I’m different at work and I’m different at home, thanks to the programme and particularly the insights I gained from the EQi profile” Debs told us:

‘This delegate, let’s call him John, is a sales manager with one of our automotive clients.  He’s been described as a bull in a china shop, someone who gets things done by ruffling feathers and a lot else along the way.  When we looked at his EQi profile, he scored high on assertiveness, and very low on impulse control.  The picture could not have been clearer.

We begin our leadership programme with an hour’s individual coaching around the EQi profile results. I think John knew deep down that he had an issue, especially when we discussed how others reacted to him, so he set out to gain some feedback. Unsurprisingly the feedback confirmed everything that the EQi had uncovered. However, it’s one thing to achieve self-awareness, making change is quite another.  Our programme lasts for 12 months and is a combination of individual coaching, group sessions and projects, all integrated with line manager support.  At the end of the year, John was able to say “It’s incredible now – people try to provoke me and I don’t bite.  I take measured decisions.  My wife has noticed a big difference in me too.”

It’s very rewarding to see a transformation like that – both at work and at home.  We find the feedback from EQi is very powerful, particularly at the very start of the programme, and makes the delegates very receptive to the learning we offer.  This is important as many of our clients are in sales, and are from the automotive industry, which tends to be a more macho culture.  EQi is the tool that gives us licence to have deeper conversations with the delegates. In that first hour of feedback, we can really get to grips with the person in front of us.  They open up very quickly, especially as this type of delegate tends to enjoy talking about themselves!  Sometimes they marvel at how much they’ve told us in that hour, which all helps to make them open to the learning to come.
