Last week I benefitted from exquisite coaching by a delegate on Q. Learning’s ILM Coaching Programme. That night I slept better than I had for a very long time.

When was the last time you had a really good night’s sleep and woke the next day full of va va voom and ready to cope with whatever life presented? We all know from personal experience the impact sleep has on our day.

An article in the McKinsey Quarterly earlier this year discussed the impact on an organisation if collectively, individuals are suffering from insufficient sleep.

http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/organization/our-insights/the-organizational-cost-of-insufficient-sleep

The following are all affected by sleep;

  • attention
  • concentration
  • creativity
  • development of insight
  • pattern recognition
  • learning and memory
  • decision making
  • emotional reactions
  • socioemotional processing
  • developing trusted relationships

Which in turn affect how well leaders

  • focus on results
  • solve problems
  • seek different perspectives
  • support others

What can organisations do?

Introduce sleep management programmes.

Introduce company policies on behaviours that can eat into our sleep time

  • Around travel
  • Emails usage
  • Switching off on holidays

And encourage the use of smart technology to improve sleep management – there are many tools available.

And how about napping rooms or sleep pods for those 10 to 30 minute naps providing us with a much needed boost when required?

What can you do?

Interrupt your racing mind and overcome the worry and other negative emotions that go with the experience of being unable to sleep. Receiving great coaching can ease the load, reduce the tension and enable better sleep.
